SPECIALIST MATERIAL CARE
Leather and suede need a different kind of clean
Natural hides, specialist finishes, linings and trims can all respond differently to cleaning. We choose the safest suitable process after inspecting the individual garment.
Leather and suede can show natural shade variation, wear and colour changes. We assess the existing finish before choosing the safest suitable process.
Smooth leather may need conditioning and finishing. Suede and nubuck are re-fatted and nap-finished where appropriate to help restore suppleness and improve the surface appearance after cleaning.
Linings, stretch panels, bonded details, printed graphics, zips and mixed materials are assessed as part of the garment — not treated as an afterthought.
An additional water-repellent treatment can be applied where technically suitable. It can help reduce water absorption, but it does not make a garment waterproof and may not be appropriate for every leather, suede or finish.

Why Re:Finery
Re:Finery brings almost four decades of specialist garment-care experience to leather, suede and nubuck garments across the UK.
All leather and suede processing is carried out in-house by our own specialist team. Dry cleaning or wet cleaning is selected according to the individual garment rather than using one process for everything.
Material, construction, care label, existing finish and condition are assessed before treatment. If we identify a material risk that needs your approval, we’ll contact you before proceeding.
No surprise paid work — specialist care is agreed clearly, and tracked return is included.
Leather & suede cleaning FAQs
Many leather, suede and nubuck garments can be professionally cleaned, but every item is assessed first. We do not accept exotic or reptile skins, fur or sheepskin/shearling garments, handbags or luggage, footwear, heavily peeling PU or faux leather, airbag-integrated, heated or electronically equipped leather garments, active heavy mould or biological contamination, severe structural failure or major crash damage. Mixed materials, patent, coated or metallic finishes, vintage garments, complex trims and missing care labels are assessment-led rather than automatic rejection. If you’re unsure, email photographs to info@re-finery.co.uk.
Not always. We aim for the best safe improvement. Permanent staining, colour loss and marks caused by wear or ageing may remain, and aggressive treatment is not used where it would create unnecessary risk to the garment.
Yes. Leather and suede are natural materials, so existing variation in colour, grain, nap and texture can become more visible after cleaning. Fading, abrasion, weak areas and previous wear cannot always be reversed.
No. Recolouring and colour restoration are not currently offered through this service. Cleaning also does not repair peeling coatings, delamination, split skins, seam damage or other structural faults.
Suede and nubuck are cleaned using a process selected for the individual garment. Refatting and nap finishing are carried out where appropriate to help improve suppleness and surface appearance. The optional +£15 water-repellent treatment is separate and is only applied where technically suitable; it does not make the garment waterproof.
A missing care label does not automatically mean we cannot help. We assess the material, construction, finish, trims, condition and any available information before deciding whether a safe process is available. We’ll contact you if we need further information or approval.
Standard non-airbag racing leathers can be accepted subject to inspection. Remove detachable armour or pads and electronic accessories where practical before sending. Airbag-integrated, heated or electronically equipped garments are not accepted through the standard online service. Major crash damage, split leather, structural repair needs and severe fuel or oil contamination are outside the standard clean. Logos, graphics, bonded trims, stretch panels, contrast colours and adhesives are assessed before processing. Cleaning does not include crash-damage repair, seam repair, panel replacement or recolouring.
If we identify a material risk that requires your approval, we’ll contact you before proceeding. We do not add surprise paid work. Our priority is the safest realistic improvement for the garment and its condition.
